It’s the little things I will always remember..
The smell of the Saturday newspaper concealing a bag of sweets for my brother and I, the sing songs in the car and the patient answer to the nightly ‘how many days is it until Christmas’….
I loved horse riding. Some how you found the money and once a month without any failure you would drive me out to the riding stables enjoying the thrilled look on my face as I trotted around the paddock on a well worn riding school pony. I loved to run too and every week you would take me to the park and encourage me with your stop-watch to run faster and cheer me along every step of the way. I could see how proud you were of me..
You worked hard but never complained and always saved your humour for my brother and I. Consequently we found life a great adventure with your funny observations on life and we never felt deprived even when the only thing in the cupboard to eat was bread and sugar.
We would sit around the table with our bread & butter and you would place a bowl of sugar in the middle. You showed us how to dip the bread into the sugar and take a bite with a big smile and as we ate we would all sing..
Bread and butter Dipped in sugar Its so sweet Nice to eat …
And we all laughed and at that moment bread & butter dipped in sugar was almost the sweetest thing in the whole wide world…..
Dad- I want to thank you for teaching me that life is full of fun, adventure and love. You have made me appreciate the good in many things and have made me able to conquer life with humour & optimism
There is only one thing sweeter in life than bread & butter dipped in sugar
You…..
